Domestic student applications

Background

Most if not all students receive graduate research assistanceships, and most students participate in exciting field research, for instance in Antarctica or on our research lab on Elk Mountain. Our King Air is involved in research projects across the country and abroad, for instance in Florida, the East Coast, Alaska, and the West Coast.

Students are admitted to the M.S. program at the beginning of the Fall semester, although on occasion students enter in January. At the time of admission, they should have earned a B.S. degree with a "B" average or better in a science or engineering discipline. Thus while students in the final stages of completing their undergraduate program can submit an application for consideration prior to graduation, admission is only permitted following the award of their B.S. degree. We encourage applicants with expertise in meteorology, physics, engineering, geophysics, mathematics, environmental science, chemistry, and other relevant disciplines. A solid background in science is the best preparation, and proven aptitude for scientific work is the best qualification.

We anticipate that applicants to our Ph.D. program will have completed, or expect to complete before admission, an M.S. degree in a relevant physical science discipline, that includes the conduct of research and the writing of a thesis.
