AgI Seeding of Clouds Impact Investigation(ASCII12) 4 Jan 2012 - 4 Mar 2012 Wyoming Cloud Radar Status Report Content: WCR configuration Radar Status/Problems General Notes Calibration Notes Other notes Data Files Information ................................................................................ WCR configuration: WCR is installed on UW King Air with 3-antenna configuration: Antenna 1 2,4 and polarization capability for Ant. 1. Antenna ports are: Ant1(side/up) - H1, Ant2 (near nadir) - V2, Ant4 (down-fore) - H2; H/V stands for the receiver used (there are 2 receivers). Cross-polarization channels (hxvx and vxhx, where x is 'h' or 'v') valid for Ant1 only. ................................................................................ Radar Status/Problems * Preparation of the radar = Aug 2011 - 15" down-aft antenna re-installed (no shims) - re-programmed spare RCB installed - new modulator re-installed - ground test from positioner using RAF 12" conical horn lens ant:OK = Sep 19 - new modulator (modulator 2) blew a fuse (F2); further testing showed that 2 transistors in the power supply board (left bottom card) in the controller were damaged. The modulator was sent to Pulse Systems - the old modulator (modulator 1) was re-installed and tested on the ground OK = Sep 23 - WCR was installed in King Air = Sep 26 - modulator 1 would not switch from Standby to Radiate; checked Standby/Radiate switch and Local/Remote switch - they were fine. New attempt to Radiate worked. Just in case Local/Remote switch was fully disabled. - Corner reflector calibration attempt failed: unidentified severe attenuation (more than 20 dB) for H1 channel = Sep 27 - successful CR calibration = Oct 04 - successful test of the re-rprogrammed spare RCB (EMS switch table);cross-talk between Up/side and Down-slant antenna seems to be fully eliminated (isolation increased by about 20 dB); beam cal data for Applanix and Honeywell comparison - left spare RCB installed (sent original RCB to be reprogrammed) - recieved the reprogrammed original RCB (before the end of Oct) = Nov 03 - test flight with beam cal data using 7.5 m rg and 200ns@20kHz - in the midle of the 2nd file the recordings of the RTD temperatures got stuck recording the same values till the end of the flight - likely a problem with RCB = Nov 08 - radiation test from ground of the repaired new modulator (Modulator2) about 1 hour transmission - worked fine - numerous crashes of the radar server - locked temperature readings, other display errors, crashes when changing radar parameters = Nov 30 - communication problem between the RCB and the server was diagnosed to be a result of some interference finding its way to the data packet send via the intranet from the RCB to the server. - the network cables from the RCB network port RJ45 to the RF bendix connector and from the RF bendix connector to host computer eth1 RJ45 connector was replaced with a single shielded RJ45 network cable. This seems to reduce the interference and prevents the radar server of losing the connection. = Dec 05 - the replacement of the intranet cable test - beam-calibration maneuvers: high pitch rate, circles, straight legs * Notes for specific flights: = For all flights the Modulator status word is frequently corrupted caused by the still existing interference after changing the intranet cable between the RCB and ferret = Occasionally (and 7 times during the feb28a flight, all but one file) H1 and H2 beams gets scrambled without any intervention by te operator. This is a data system problem and there is no solution for it (according to Prosensing). = Frequently there is a spurious spike after the Tx fire which affects the up beam only. It is typically less than 5 dB above the mean noise at the peak and extends no more than 5 range gates at the base of the spike. ______ Oct 04 = Test flight: checking the radar for the change in the EMS table, the switching noise, antennas cross-talk, and beam angles calibration ______ Nov 03 = Test flight: several maneuvers for beam calibration and Applanix tests = RF fans were left OFF for the whole flight. = The radar stopped recording RTD temperatures (see above) ______ Dec 05 = intranet interface: still noisy (affected modulator status fields) = interference spikes(looks like EMS switch type) are present covering first ~5 gates for H1 channel only. The last file is clean ______ Dec 08 = same issues as Dec05 = in addition the 100 ns pulse mode (down beam only, V2) exhibits spike behavior with multiple spikes extending for 20 gates (7.5 m each), while the 250 ns modes shows no more than 4-5 gates (15m each) affected by a single spikes starting before the 1st data gate in the H1 beam, but clean for H2 and V2. It is not clear if the 100 ns pulse problem is caused by the same interference as the spike in the 250 ns pulse (and 200 ns pulse for Dec05) data. ______ Dec 19 = side/up first gates interference (coded: H1Txleak or V1TxLeak) could not be identified due to strong cloud/precip returns throughout the flight ______ Jan 03 = H1Txleak and V1Txleak present about 50% of the time ______ Jan 03 = H1Txleak can be seen when no weather signal is present. We will have to assume that this interference is present in the opther files and also during other flights ______ Jan 16b (RF04) = Larry and Jeff reported problem with the radar data right from the beginning of the flight (this was the 2nd flight for the day with about 1 hour stop on the tarmac in front of our hangar) Some kind of scrambling of H1 and H2 data (V2 was fine at all times) causing horizontal stripes in the Doppler (non-coherent pp). Re-starting a new file, shutting down the server and restarting did not fix the problem. Also the server crashed. Re-booting ferret did not solve the problem. Full power off (DC/AC off) and restart fixed it. = Last minute of the last file H1 and H2 are scrambled (same as in the past) ................................................................................ General Notes: * Quick look images of reflectivity and Doppler veocity for all the flights are stored on the project WCR web site in their corresponding directories (mmmDD) as mostly pdf files. * WCR raw data is archived on a disk array in the UW DAS and a mass storage at NCAR. Quicklooks, dataquality, and calibration data are also archived. Radar processed data files in NetCDF format are available usually within 2 months after the conclusion of the experiment (preliminary version is generally available during the field campaign). The NetCDF files are available via the Internet. They may be protected with a password. Contact the PI for access. ................................................................................ Calibration notes: **************************************************************************** Power Calibration: * Calibration constants used for the quick look images (200 ns pulse, 5 MHz IF filter): Ant. 1 (H1,side/up, h-pol), H1cal1 = 37.5 calibrated with corner reflector Ant. 1 (V1,side/up, v-pol), V1cal1 = 39.5 calibrated relative to H1 Ant. 2 (V2,nadir), V2cal2 = 37.8 calibrated relative to H1 Ant. 4 (H2,down-fore), H2cal2 = 42.5 calibrated relative to V2 * Notes: 1) The absolute accuracy of the calibration constant for the "up/side" antenna(H1) is estimated to be better than 3 dB. The precision of the calibration from the corner reflector is within 1.5 dB. 2) The accuracy of the calibration constant for the rest of the beams is with respect to H1. The expected added uncertainty is about 1-2 dB. The slanted beam reflectivity uncertainty is expected to be a bit higher than the reflectivity for up, side, and down beams. 3) Cross-channel/antenna isolation: up/side antenna h-pol-to-v-pol is better than 30 dB all other antennas: is greater than 50 dB: 4) Saturation of the digital receivers at close range for strong targets: The saturation starts at about 0 dBm. The data from the first several range gates (up to ~300 m) may be saturated for the up/side and down antennas when the cloud/precip return exeeds approximately +22 dBZ. Surface return for up to ~6 km AGL may have pixels(data points) in the saturation range (0 to ~2.7 dBm). The percentage of saturated profiles decreases with range and is small at large ranges. **************************************************************************** Beam angles calibration: * Unit beam angles(in AC coordinates) for this experiment as of 10 Dec 2010 utilizing the Honeywell LaserRef 3 inertial reference system: X(along AC) Y(right wing) Z(down) Ant. 1 (side): -0.0125, 0.99992, 0.00296 [deg] 90.7162 0.724698 89.8304 Ant. 1 (up): 0.0575641, 0.0, -0.9983418 [deg] 86.7 90.0 -3.3 Ant. 2 (nadir): -0.0527349, -0.00014341, 0.998609 [deg] 93.02, 90.01, 3.02 Ant. 4 (down-fore): 0.440406, 0.00138427, 0.8977977 [deg] 63.87, 89.92, 26.13 The accuracy of the beam angles for 'up' beam is not known due to lack of calib data. The accuracy of the down beams is within 0.4 deg. King Air maneuvers for beam calibration should be done with the following considerations in mind: = preferred weather conditions: clear air, light to moderate winds = low turbulence at flight level = 3000 ft AGL flight level = 45 deg turns = flat terrain with no ponds/lakes = no precipitation reaching the surface detected by the radar Cloud runs for checking the up beam pointing angles = light winds, deep stratiform clouds and/or very light precip are desirable = 2-3 mins passes in the middle of the cloud or precip = straight and leveled legs with up-dualdown config: -2 legs forth and back along the wind -2 legs forth and back across the wind ................................................................................ Other notes: * WCR data acquisition system (DAQ) records time stamps from an IRIG card which is slaved to the master KA data system time server. The recorded time stamps are UTC time. * The zero range gate (first data gate) is about 105 m (for 250 ns pulse). The far field for the 12" up/side antenna is 60 m and the far field for the 15" down-slant antenna and 18" down antenna are 91 m and 131 m, respectively. * When maximum unambiguous range is 7.5 km and the aircraft flies AGL close to that range the data can be contaminated from second trip surface echoes. * Antenna Coupling Separation for all non-polarimetric antennas is better than 50 dB, but could be less than the radar dynamic range. Coupling between down and down-aft antenna (leak into the down-aft return) as well as between up and down-aft antenna (leak into the up return) are present for strong targets (mostly surface returns). ................................................................................
