Additional information about the variables and attributes in the files is provided in the netcdf prototype file WCR_L2.cdl * The data files are saved in L2/ sub-directories rfXX_mmmDD representing the research flight number and month and date of the flight using the WCR. * L2 Reflectivity and velocity for each active beam(antenna) are written in separate files. In addition a merged up-down data file is generated from the up and down antenna L1 products when both antennas have been used during the acquisition. L2 products are thresholded and filtered to remove noise pixels. This takes care of more than 95% of the noise in the L1 products. However there is a tradeoff. The thresholding scheme may remove some pixels from weak targets and/or also affect the spatial boundaries of the targets. On the other hand some noise pixels may be left in the images and may or may not be difficult to be recognized as such. Most of the time L2 products should be sufficient and accurate enough to be used for scientific analysis. The calibration accuracy of the L2 reflectivity and velocity is similar to the corresponding L1 products. See L1 Release notes for additional information. For some specialized analysis where more sophisticated target and artifact detection may be needed it is recommended that the users utilize the L1 products and do their own processing. In L2 an additional data averaging is implemented before thresholding and the reflectivity is provided in dBZ. This means that further averaging of L2 reflectivity would not increase the sensitivity (improve minimum detectable signal). If such improved sensitivity (with the expense of reduced spatial resolution) is needed the user should work with L1 data. Also keep in mind that the interpolation implemented in L2 may introduce some minor biases. For the L2 Doppler velocities the biases could be large if data is folded. Velocity folding is not resolved in the L1 data (used to generate L2 data). Thus, in case of folding, it is possible that pixels located at the borders of the folding may contain values that has large bias due to averaging of folded and unfolded data points. * Quick looks The quick looks for L2 reflecitivity and velocity products are similar to the quick looks produced from L1 reflectivity and velocity products, but there are some differences. First, it is more accurate to call them quick looks than the ones for L1 since there is much less additional processing to the L2 written reflectivity and velocity to produce them. The main additional processing that is done to generate these quick looks is to apply the reflectivity mask available in the files under variable name 'wcrmask'. Bits 3 to 8 and bit 11 of the mask are used in the quick looks. Bits 5, 6, and 7 are used to highlight the affected pixels, if any, in the images (shown in black). Pixels that are affected by bits 3, 4, 8 and 11 are removed (not plotted). Second. The L2 mask, wcrmask, is not as accurate as the mask in L1 files (reflectivity_mask). The reason is the altitude interpolation implemented for all up and down pointing L2 products. On occasion this causes some pixels masked in L1 reflectivity_mask to get lost in L2 wcrmask. Third. Some of the bits in wcrmask, at this time, are not implemented as true bits. This means that, for example, bit 4 for radar blind zone is saved as fixed value of 16. So when removing all pixels more than 6 degrees off of vertical for up, down or up-down by searching for active bit 3 (value 8) it will not remove the pixels associated with the blind zone (bit 4), because those pixels were given value 16 in the wcrmask. This behavior may be changed in the future. Forth. Not all mask bits in L1 reflectivity_mask are passed on to L2 wcrmask. One example is the pixels affected by antennas cross-talk. As a result, in rare occasions, you may see some small artifacts in L2 quick looks that are not present in L1 quick looks. Fifth. The distance axis in the L2 quick looks is based on the aircraft ground speed, while the L1 quick look distance axis is based on the aircraft air speed. This introduces some difference in distance depending on the wind speed and wind direction with respect to the aircraft heading. * Known corrupted data not fixed in this revision: = No known corrupted data ================================================================================
